New Baars’ barges for deployment on the River Thames in London

With the population of London now eight million and growing, the Thames Tideway Tunnel is a twenty five kilometer tunnel being constructed beneath the River Thames that will prevent tens of millions of tonnes of untreated sewage polluting the Thames every year.

The construction of numerous shafts and the tunnelling operations for this project has generated a great demand for barge operations on the River Thames. .

One of London’s major Marine Contractors, Alan C Bennett & Sons Limited, commissioned Baars BV in May 2017 to build eight new hopper barges to enhance their existing fleet and with this specific project in mind. Six of these barges, two 1000 tonne and four 1500 tonne, are being purchased by Bennett, all will be RINA classed. Two 1650 tonne barges will be chartered by Bennett to support the BAM Nuttal, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty joint venture who are delivering the 7km west section of the tunnel. At the end of a two year charter period the barges will return the Baars fleet. Delivery of all eight vessels is on schedule for the first quarter of 2018. The last barges left the Netherlands at Tuesday 10th of April.
