Innovative Zero-Emission Split Hopper Barges for the Danube
Baars is developing and delivering two innovative 640 m³ E-Split Hopper Barges for VERBUND Hydro Power, designed for operation on the Danube. This project marks an important step in the transition towards sustainable, zero-emission marine construction and dredging operations in Europe.
From the initial concept stage, the focus has been on creating a future-proof, fully electric solution. The barges will be deployed for maintenance operations around hydroelectric power plants, where reliability, efficiency and operational continuity are essential.
Innovation and Engineering
Working closely with international partners, Baars has completely redesigned and further developed the existing split hopper barge concept. The engineering scope included:
- concept and detailed engineering
- structural and stability calculations
- integration of electrical and hydraulic systems
- design in accordance with ES-TRIN regulations
This integrated approach has resulted in a robust, future-ready platform for sustainable dredging and marine construction operations.
Fully Electric Configuration
Each E-Split Hopper Barge is equipped with:
- onboard battery packs
- a fully electric hydraulic system
- an electric bow thruster
- a 100-tonne electric SENNEBOGEN material handler
Together, these systems create a zero-emission working platform with low noise levels, high energy efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements.
Strong Partnership
Within the Neptune Group, Baars works closely with partners including C-Systems, which is responsible for the electrical installation and energy distribution. By combining expertise in marine construction, shipbuilding and electrical engineering, the partners are delivering an innovative, reliable and fully integrated solution.
From Concept to Operation on the Danube
In April 2026, the first barge successfully arrived in Ybbs, Austria. Following commissioning and final system integration, the vessel will enter operational service on the Danube.
With this project, Baars further strengthens its position as an innovative partner in sustainable marine construction, dredging and inland waterway solutions. The knowledge and experience gained will provide a strong foundation for the further development of zero-emission work vessels and fully electric marine construction platforms across Europe.
