Modular Barges and Split Barges for Loire River Restoration

In France, significant efforts are underway to restore the riverbed of the Loire between Nantes and Les Ponts-de-Cé. Historical interventions during the 19th and 20th centuries lowered the riverbed, adversely affecting local ecosystems and biodiversity. To re-establish the natural balance, targeted modifications are being made at various locations along the river. This complex restoration is being carried out in close collaboration with local partners, under the leadership of Voies Navigables de France (VNF).

For this extensive 30-kilometer restoration project, Baars supplied a range of modular pontons and split barges, providing tailored solutions to meet the unique challenges of working on water. In cooperation with contractors Charier and NGE, the project was successfully executed in Duis, near Nantes.

Tailored Solutions for Water-Based Works
Restoring a riverbed requires precision and reliable equipment, especially when working in confined spaces with limited quay access. Flexibility and adaptability of the equipment are critical to ensure smooth operations.

For this project, three dismountable split barges and four complete modular ponton platforms were deployed. This specialized water construction equipment enabled efficient dredging and material transport operations.

Key benefits of the chosen solution included:

  • Flexible assembly and deployment
  • Stability during operations
  • Efficient material transport
  • Suitability for locations with limited space

Through close collaboration with the French contractors, Baars was able to demonstrate its expertise as a specialist in floating equipment, contributing to the success of this important environmental project in France.

Split Barges for Dredging and Transport
The split barges were primarily used for dredging activities and transporting stones to the various project sites. Their dismountable design allowed for economical and straightforward road transport to the work locations.

For projects like this, renting split barges proves to be a highly efficient solution, enabling controlled delivery and unloading of materials at precise spots along the river.

Modular Pontons for River Projects
In addition to the split barges, several modular pontons were utilized as stable work platforms to support construction activities.

These 6-foot-high pontons provided ample load capacity and operational flexibility to accommodate a variety of tasks. Their modular design with also intern spudlegs, allowed on-site assembly, even under spatial constraints at the quay, showcasing the versatility of linked modular pontons as a practical solution for complex water engineering projects.

Smart Logistics and Close Cooperation
The project demanded meticulous logistics and teamwork. Unloading trucks on-site posed challenges due to space limitations, but thanks to effective coordination between transporters, Baars’ technicians, and especially the local project team, the process ran smoothly.

The combination of dredging equipment and modular systems ensured that the project progressed efficiently without delays.
